Post 5: Changes to my study program

Hello everyone! In today's post I will discuss what I would like to change in my study program.

I should begin by saying that I am majoring in Design. To be more precise, I am following the "Visuality and Media" concentration (Spanish: Visualidad y Medios), with the goal of becoming a graphic and book designer and be part of the book publishing industry.

What would I like to change about my study program? For starters, I would like that the University provided us with more tools and materials. Yesterday I needed a "long reach stapler" to put together a small zine, but, guess what, there was none to be found on campus. Other times we have to wait in queues to print stuff or have access to tools. As the course deadlines approach, having limited access to resources put us under a lot of stress. And, besides this, we have to spend a lot of money on materials. I wish there was some sort of monetary support for students who need to buy materials.

About the facilities, my main complaint is that the campus is too cold in the Winter and too hot during the Summer. This year hasn't been too hot, but there was a year where we had to assemble a stool (yes, the furniture) working for days at high Summer temperatures. I used to end up thirsty and with headaches. Thus, I would like if the rooms had better temperatures.

Regarding the courses available, I wish there were more courses about book editorial design and print media. I took an editorial design course and it was mostly about crafting books from sheets of paper, which is useful and enjoyable, but I was also expecting to learn how to design stylish and effective book covers and page layouts. If the major had more courses about book and editorial design, it would be fantastic!

It would also be very nice if there were more opportunities to study abroad. I think studying in other countries represents a great opportunity to learn about new perspectives and ideas.

  3. I completely agree with the issue of materials; in design, we spend too much money.
